Use the "80-20" rule

As you sort through the information you receive, consider the 80-20 principle, which offers helpful lessons for prioritizing information. This rule (often referred to as the Pareto principle, or the "law of the vital few") states that that the relationship between input and output is rarely, if ever, balanced.

When applied to work, it means that approximately 20% of your activities produce 80% of your results. The 80-20 rule reminds you to focus on the 20% that really matters. Identify and focus on those things that contribute to that 20% and you will be well on your way to analyzing information more productively and effectively.
